Stop Making Excuses

Have you ever heard someone say they won’t do something because they’re afraid? The retiree who won’t travel because they’re afraid of traveling alone, your friend who won’t launch a business because they’re afraid it won’t be profitable, the teen who won’t apply to an Ivy League school thinking they don’t have the grades to make the cut. The list goes on and on.

There are so many “I can’ts” and “I won’ts.” I hear it a lot around me – friends, family  and colleagues stopping themselves from making the big leap for fear of failure. How many times have you heard someone say they’re “thinking” of writing a book? How many times has someone said they’d like to travel but have never thought of applying for a passport? Enough already.

Take the plunge. Take that first step. Get out of your comfort zone. Apply for a assport and book that trip of a lifetime. Sign up for that bonsai class. Train for that marathon. Apply for that business license.

Here’s why you should take action now:

  • You’ll keep living a life of “what ifs” if you don’t.
  • You’re setting a good example to others in your circle.
  • Positive fear is good.
  • You’ll become bolder and braver.
  • You’ll keep dreaming bigger and start achieving even bigger goals you once thought were unattainable.
  • You’ll feel better about yourself.

Recently, a friend was telling me about a big win in his personal life, how he had almost given up years ago, but decided to give it one more shot. He said, “I had to try one more time or I’ll forever be left wondering what the outcome would have been.”

Does that sound familiar?

In my own life, here’s how I’ve stopped making excuses and took action:

  • I finally wrote THAT book.
  • I launched my blog.
  • I made a commitment to get/stay fit by walking/hiking four to six miles a day. (tip: those fitness trackers and a solid group do help!)
  • I stopped blaming my ex for my troubles (I still do sometimes but it no longer consumes me.)
  • I stopped being afraid of driving thousands of miles solo and now take my daughter on a two-week road trip every summer.
